We stayed in August to hike Gulf Hagas and had a wonderful time. The meals were delicious, hearty and so satisfying after a long day on the trail. The staff was welcoming and friendly and communal meals were a great way to find out about other trails and hear good stories. Our cabin was a perfect size for two and a few logs on the fire kept us warm all night. Very highly recommend and will stay again!!
Prior to coming to Little Lyford you must meet the caretaker in the town of Greenville. The meeting hour was 11AM.
The caretaker pulled out a map and showed us the trail to the hut. There are two ways to the hut. You can follow the snowmobile route for 6 miles or you can take the hiking trail for 7 miles.
The hiking trail was packed down with snowmobile sleds and the skiing was wonderful. The trail was wide enough for skate skier to get around but take skate ski's if you feel comfortable skiing up hill a lot. The trail winds up and down and up and down. The trail leads mostly through the woods and protects you from the wind.
We made it to the camp in about 3 hours. The main lodge is impressive and the bunkhouse feels inviting with the woodstove keeping the inside quarters toasty.
The location of the camp is a little bit remote. Compared to some established AMC huts like the Lonesome Lake where one parks in a parking lot right off the highway this camp is a bit off the beaten path. The dirt road that leads to the gate is snowed in. The road is plowed but snow drifts develop every day. Four wheeled vehicle is preferred but a carefully driven front wheel drive vehicle can make it to the parking lot too.
Had a great time, the food was good. And they allow dogs, so our dog had a vacation and we saved the cost of her boarding.
Sky Blue Blaze follows all the way to the Lyford Camp and the name of the trail is Hedgehog Gate Trail. - if you remember this fact then you will feel much more comfortable leading a group to the camp.
What a wonderful place. Off the grid, way in the woods of Maine, quiet, serene. The staff at Little Lyford is fantastic, and the food was top notch. The cabins are rustic yet comfortable. Wonderful hiking, paddling/canoeing, wildlife viewing. The skies at night were breathtaking. If you want to get away from it all, and escape to a place that gets you in tune with nature, you can't find many better places.
This camp has luxuries that many will appreciate on a winter day. First it has hot showers and second it has a wonderful SAUNA. Enough said - we had a great time and the cooking was superb. Thanks.
Can't wait for the next trip. Nothing but positive things to say about the entire stay.
The caretaker looked at our vehicle and determined we could make it to the gate. We followed his 4x4 to the destination. It was a cold day, around -20 F windchill factor.
Over the course of the trail we encountered about 6 intersections without any clear indication of which way is to the Lyford Camp. Only when we made it to the camp we could make a definitive statement (which should be written on the AMC maps) that:
The snowmobile route is exposed and it gets icy. If you ski to the camp then the road could prove to be no fun at all.
